The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

Good music! not often I hear sonic youth in a soundtrack Not the greatest acting, but that's not that important Young Neal from the scott pilgrim universe! Casually homophobic and sexist dad that's not addressed at all. At least it's only one instance as I recall. Patrick's a great friend! Kinda jealous of that friend group. Unoriginal, mainstream-pleasing vegan shaming. Even more so disappointing for a film that otherwise takes a sympathetic view to outsiders. At least those scenes are over quickly An example of people who question norms in one regard may still have "blindspots" in others' where they follow norms uncritically in their values and their actions. It sadly makes partial sense, though, because when you want a movie to succeed in the mainstream, the characters and content perhaps can't be that foreign to a mainstream audience. That may also very well be the reason they clearly highlight that it's a Christian family. Doesn't excuse anything, though. Charlie gave those homophobic bullies what they deserve. "Why do I and everyone I love pick people who treat us like we're nothing?" "We accept the love we think we deserve." "We can't choose where we come from, but we can choose where we go from there". ...don't fully agree on that latter part. Many things still affect how we act even as grown ups, fx. sometimes towards doing things that waste time or are more actively detrimental. But believing/imagining/pretending we do fully have the control might still yield the best outcomes. I wish teaching was more respected as a field, both in terms of respect and pay. It's one of the most important, like health care.Did not figure out what the aunt had done until near the end. Tragic! Closer to 3 than 5.
