Great characters, great writing! Might even deserve a 5.

Exandria Unlimited: Calamity (2021-)

♥♥♥♥♥

So good. Luis steals the show especially IMO.

Have not yet watched Exandria Unlimited itself, but only Calamity. It's really a separate series - and a completely different story - than the original + Kymal.

The Secret of Kells (2009)

♥♥♥♥

What a lovely film! Visually interesting and occasionally very beautiful - and a wonderful soundtrack!
Might even deserve a 5.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

Good music! not often I hear sonic youth in a soundtrack
Not the greatest acting, but that's not that important
Young Neal from the scott pilgrim universe!

Casually homophobic and sexist dad that's not addressed at all. At least it's only one instance as I recall.

Patrick's a great friend! Kinda jealous of that friend group.

Unoriginal, mainstream-pleasing vegan shaming. Even more so disappointing for a film that otherwise takes a sympathetic view to outsiders. At least those scenes are over quickly
An example of people who question norms in one regard may still have "blindspots" in others' where they follow norms uncritically in their values and their actions.
It sadly makes partial sense, though, because when you want a movie to succeed in the mainstream, the characters and content perhaps can't be that foreign to a mainstream audience.
That may also very well be the reason they clearly highlight that it's a Christian family.
Doesn't excuse anything, though.

Charlie gave those homophobic bullies what they deserve.

"Why do I and everyone I love pick people who treat us like we're nothing?"
"We accept the love we think we deserve."

"We can't choose where we come from, but we can choose where we go from there".
...don't fully agree on that latter part. Many things still affect how we act even as grown ups, fx. sometimes towards doing things that waste time or are more actively detrimental.
But believing/imagining/pretending we do fully have the control might still yield the best outcomes.

I wish teaching was more respected as a field, both in terms of respect and pay. It's one of the most important, like health care.

Did not figure out what the aunt had done until near the end. Tragic!

Closer to 3 than 5.

Made like it's a play.

Spectacular visuals - cinematography, set designs and costumes, I'll give it that. Kinda like a Wes Anderson-film in that way. Or Kubrick, in which case I guess it'd be most similar to A Clockwork Orange.

That's where the similarities, end, though, because it's a pretty boring, repetitive story and uninspired writing. And a matching repetitive but fairly good soundtrack. Acting is nothing special.

There's incessant speciesism up front almost constantly, with it's focus on what's still considered food in this age. On top of that there's a ton violence towards human animals too, sexism, nudity and sex. Don't know if it's supposed to be edgy decadence to catch attention or what. Maybe, optimistically, it's partially trying to show the obvious relationship between inter-human-animal violence and violence towards other animals.

The repetitive nature of it does make it somewhat hypnotic, though. Admittedly I was also somewhat agitated while watching it, so maybe I missed some actually interesting symbolism or something.

Was about to say that maybe child safety wasn't taken seriously enough in terms of what they're exposed to, but apparently fx. the child-like looking singer was around 25(?!) according to IMDB, which says he was born in 1963. Wtf?!

Call Me by Your Name (2017)

♥♥♥♥

Don't really like romantic stories of young people and significantly older adults, regardless of the gender of the people in question. Especially not if they're written by someone in the latter category. At least it's not yet another example of older man, young woman/teen, and at least in this case it's mostly the younger person making advances, but still.

Nice soundtrack!
Good advertisement for a life in northern italy, with such a house, and the orchard!
I imagine it'd be really awesome to live in a place like that! Maybe that should be my future life at some point.

Hoping and planning to reach his piano playing skills

Notting Hill (1999)

♥♥♥

it seems the film has been written to fulfill a fantasy of some movie fans wishing they were with a movie star.
music is generally not that good.

regarding the scene showing a certain someone stealing a book: this is just before bernard (dylan moran) starts his bookshop in Black Books, lol! (btw. a great show, with an asshat of a creator (graham)) guess he stole his books here to get the collection for the bookshop started!

william is really quite creepily pushy when she comes visiting, both times. and his roommate too. this is probably characteristic of the writer: someone only pretending to be nice.

julia roberts is charming as always, and some of their scenes together are too despite the above, but probably that side plot with the friend group is the best part of this film

the last scenes with all the fame is pretty silly, and shouldn't have been included.

An honorary +1 for creating a fascinating scifi world, with things like friend proxy, those robot dog poop collectors and whatnot. Might even deserve the 5 without it though.

More interesting and more mature plot than the original, but also not as consistently entertaining or as well written. I think with a bit more work it could've gotten there.
Still, it was a nice watch. Nice to see Ramona's perspective get more screen time, even though it's still so focused on Scott.
