Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995)

♥♥♥♥

+1 for subject matter, but I assume I'd find it less entertaining now compared to when I was a teen.

Loved it as a teen, but it would probably drop a couple of ratings if I saw it now. (So the rating here has been adjusted)

All the Dirty Harry films are rated long after seeing them. I more or less recall the first one as the best one, and all the other ones being so-so, some of them maybe even worse.

Exciting! I like that it's characters aren't always so clearcut evil or good, but fallen heroes and the like.. Or I guess the good people are clearly good, but sometimes the villains do good, and in other cases they may not be, but you can understand why they act as they do.

Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

Seems like a really weird action film, as if trying to appeal to a totally different audience than trek fans - and what a weird, exaggerated contrast effect on the visuals sometimes!

Overall probably the worst ST movie (not factoring in JJ Abrams and beyond), but I did like the ending. Wished it was more like the series final.

Star Trek TNG film rankings, best to worst:
First Contact, Insurrection, Generations, Nemesis

Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

English title: Star Trek: First Contact (VIII)

♥♥♥♥♥

Beautiful ship! Beautiful film - and a good soundtrack!

Strange turn of events where suddenly the borg are not in a state of chaos after individuality was introduced. It's almost as if that never happened.

If things haven't changed, Dr. Crusher is precisely the only person who can declare the captain unfit for command, and take command herself, but apparently she doesn't think he is, or has that been forgotten? Could've resolved things faster, and perhaps saved some lives.

Favourite ST film overall so far!

Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

English title: Star Trek: Insurrection (IX)

♥♥♥♥

Nice anti-imperialist and anti tyranny-of-the-majority message. This film again feels like a (good) two-part episode.
Anij is quite wonderful, but it also reminds me a bit of what Gates said in a panel, that it was (almost) always the men that had affairs, even though they were also somewhat involved with other crew members as well, so it reinforces and justifies a sort of stereotype of women being monogamous while men are just constantly out there looking for sex, almost bordering on infidelity.

A quote from the film:
"Captain, the [..] crew would like to negotiate a cease fire. It may have something to do with the fact that we have three minutes of air left."

TNG film rankings so far:
First Contact (VIII), Insurrection (IX), Generations (VII) - though IX and VII are quite close.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

♥♥♥♥♥

Beautiful film, and a beautiful ending to TOS! Good soundtrack as well!

It's interesting to see Starfleet being clearly military but perhaps transitioning - influenced by Spock and other Vulcans - towards being more of peaceful organization, and the beginnings
of peace between Klingons and the rest of the federation! Sad to see so many be so dominated by hate and prejudice, but at least their views are being challenged, and it's kind of a theme of the movie to overcome it. Btw. good continuity with Spock's appearances in TNG as a believer in peace!

TOS crew is really a renegade crew (at least in the films), much more than the TNG crew!
Those Klingons on the cruiser seem awesome!
Worf appearing and doing good work!
I enjoyed seeing Spock and in particular Sulu(!) in command, and hearing that Uhura is a commander as well.
Apparently lifting your eyebrows is a general Vulcan trait, not just Spock. ;) :D
Also Valeris is way cooler than Saavik!
A new use of the mind meld I hadn't seen before. Intense!
I like the change at the end from "where no MAN" to "where no ONE", as in TNG.

Star Trek TOS film rankings:
VI, I, IV, III, II, V

Mighty Aphrodite (1995)

♥♥♥

But honestly, I recommend not supporting his movies, and reading this: http://kristof.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/02/01/an-open-letter-from-dylan-farrow/

All movies or TV series' by Woody Allen

Star Trek: Generations (1994)

English title: Star Trek: Generations (VII)

♥♥♥♥

What a great cast, though I think it is rather sad to just find Kirk, and then see that ending. It was also quite beautiful, just after having talked about the meaning of life, a sense of purpose etc.
It seemed like the film was just getting started at the end, though, in some sense.
As others have written, part of it does feel a bit like a two-part TNG episode, though, but it's a good two-part episode at that.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

♥♥♥♥

A very vegan movie, and I love the recognition of there not just being one sentient or intelligent species on earth. (About time!)

Three lovely quotes:
Spock: "Admiral, if we would assume that these are ours to do with as we please, we would be as guilty as those who cause their extinction."
Spock: "They like you very much, but they're not the hell your whales."
Gillian: "I don't know about you but my compassion for someone is not limited to my estimate of their intelligence"

I love that McCoy is so much a doctor that he doesn't pass on an opportunity to save lives, even though it interferes with history.

It's a bit Noah's ark (fantasy)-like to expect to repopulate a species with only two individuals, though. Suggested numbers to avoid inbreeding vary according to species, apparently, but are often in the thousands:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_viable_population
Still, that way it's more of a recognition of them as individuals rather than being nothing but a species, which is positive.

Btw. I get the impression here that Spock and Sarek's relationship is much better than the impression I got from TNG. I guess it soured later.

TOS Star Trek film rankings so far: I, IV, III, II. (Though IV and III are quite close)

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

♥♥♥

Pretty decently entertaining. I'm inclined to think the music was above average for the earlier ST films, probably courtesy of Jerry Goldsmith.

Star Trek TOS films rankings so far:
I, IV, III, II, V (though V is close to II)

All movies or TV series' by William Shatner

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

♥♥♥

Feels quite campy, like an adventure film, but I like the klingon captain, and in this one it also seems less like Spock only cares about Jim which I think is rather strange considering all the time he's spent with all the others too. Unoriginal fate that David has, though.
Almost deserves a 4, but not quite. It's surprising (perhaps even somewhat unbelievable?) that Vulcans retain such mysticism for being such an incredibly logical people.

Star Trek TOS Film rankings so far are probably: I, III, II.
