Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

♥♥♥♥♥

Wow! Much better than Into the Spider-verse!
I'd rank No Way Home between them.

If I had Honourable Mentions for films it would even make that list I think.
I mean I don't think every scene is perfect, but emotional impact, story pacing (/engagement) and visuals are just awesome!

It was so long ago I'd seen Homecoming I'd forgotten Aaron Davis his uncle was in there too.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

♥♥♥♥

Closer to 3 than 5.

Nice to see the old Spider-man crews! <3 Have yet to see Amazing Spider-man, though, so that part wasn't nostalgic for me (yet).

Love Benedict Cumberbatch as Steven Strange actually, and I often don't think his performances are particularly great, but this character he fits/performs very well!

Certainly a ton of fan service, it's pretty cool, but maybe a bit over the top. Or perhaps mainly because the main storyline often seems not that well written. But the redemption arc idea itself I love!

Love the credits animation!

Black Widow (2021)

♥♥♥♥

Actually quite good, and better than the vast majority of Bond movies. Came in with low expectations.

Scarlett Johansson...actually acts just fine in this one?! But then I just watched Keanu Reeves act in Matrix 4, so expectations weren't high in that regard.

No big complaints, but it would've been nice if some of the main characters were actually of Russian heritage, ie. had real Russian accents instead of fake ones.

Politically speaking it kinda seems to ridicule Russia and favour the west which is uninspired and uninteresting. But then it's super mainstream and made by Disney, so genuine ability for self-criticism and deep reflection in terms of politics is currently too much to expect.

I like that they don't kill her sister off for uninspired, cheap emotional impact.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

♥♥♥♥

I'm kinda surprised but I actually found parts of this touching. Action is pretty run-of-the-mill and the story is nothing to write home about I'm inclined to think.
And yet I was quite entertained, hence the rating. Not enough Guardians of the Galaxy though.

Captain Marvel (2019)

♥♥♥♥

nice performance by Larson, and nice origin story, though it seemed to go a bit fast for how much they had to tell. hope she meets someone closer to her level in the upcoming movies.

also sad to see it and Larson subject to sexists campaigning with negative scores via fake accounts, which fortunately failed in the large scheme of things, since the IMDB score is fine and it was a big commercial success.

Probably one of the best MCU movies I've seen so far, maybe even on par with Guardians of the Galaxy 1+2! Or at least close.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

♥♥♥♥

Close to 5 if not actually deserving a 5! Great soundtrack - again!

Probably the GotG movies are my favourite MCU movies so far - possibly even my favourite Marvel movies in general! A few of the X-Men movies would be the contenders.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

♥♥♥

Closer to 2 than 4.

Kinda seems like bad writing to me, but part of it might be from cut scenes.

Someone who can enslave the multiverse seems kinda big for doctor strange and the sorcerer supreme alone.
The avengers mostly deal with threats to the earth i think, so even too big for just them? Maybe ask Jean Gray instead?

The book being destroyed should set her free, then, if that was what was corrupting her. But that doesn't fit the plot, so it doesn't happen

The Sorcerer Supreme should let anyone die to protect the multiverse. also why is he so consistenly weak in this movie, in terms of the fights he's in? doing him dirty.

Great to see Charles Xavier again, and the x-men universe tied into this one.

How does strange know that that particular childhood memory was shared between those universes?
touching ending though

All that said, this video really points out a critical general weakness, likely intentional, of the MCU as a whole:

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

♥♥♥

The ring fighter, just like from Kung Fu Hustle (had kinda forgotton though)!

Kinda torn between 3 and 4, really deserves a 3½.

Went downhill in quality from the bus scene included.

Ben Kingsleys' character, LOL! His jokes weren't great, but just seeing him in that role and maybe his acting made it fun to see anyway.

And Katie seems like a great buddy!

Always great to see Michelle Yeoh! Could see the Wuxia resemblance to e.g. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Would've loved to see her fight more as well.

Path of the open palm (Yeoh opening Shaun's hands) reminded me of Jade Empire.

I want a prequel with their mother as the lead character! Her fight with asshat father was the best fight in the film.

Kinda wish the siblings had shared the rings, also because the sister was just constantly out of the spotlight due to a sexist father. Also because it could be a nice conclusion to the siblings having been apart for so long, so now they were finally together again as a family.

Black Widow was better though.

Closer to 2 than 4.

I feel the burial scene is supposed to feel very emotional and like a big moment, but it's for a character that was barely fleshed out and had little screen presence, so at least to me it didn't have that effect.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

♥♥♥

A fair bit of sexism which is sad to watch, but I suppose that was the times. Still, the writing could've reacted against it rather than just showing it, now it seems it might even be trying to depict it as (positive) nostalgia.

I agree with Johann Schmidt and disagree with Captain America in seeing a future without flags (ie. without nationalism).

Iron Man (2008)

♥♥♥

Really rather sad portrayal of manhood, objectifying and practically owning women and other people as his subjects, and displaying the military as cool, and the weapons industry so positively. Also seems to play on anti-arab racist stereotypes and nationalism. And for food we harm other animals of course! And Hugh Hefner is also portrayed positively. Iron Man ignores a woman's no as well.

In some ways it seems these things are portrayed a bit negatively, as if he's an immature asshole in the beginning, supporting the weapons industry and at the end it seems he may begin to be able to have a proper relationship seeing the other part as his equal, and at least having a somewhat more skeptical view on the weapons industry (as having profit over ethics, not much criticism of US military in itself) - but I've heard that in later films he continues to be an asshole, so I'm not really sure.

That violent egotist main villain should not be allowed to live.
